After college, Jack served his commission in the Army Corps of Engineering that included a two-year deployment in Stuttgart, Germany. He received an ROTC commission as a First Lieutenant in the Army. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity during his college years and remained an active brother throughout his life. While at the University of Illinois, he met his spouse and life-time partner of 57 years, Jean Rae Prachar on a blind date.
